Safety Tips for Commercial Trucks and Buses

To avoid truck accidents, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) public education campaign, called "Share the Road," has issued some safety tips for tractor trailer drivers, bus drivers, and commercial vehicle drivers. See below:

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF!
The most important part of a truck or bus is the driver! You should get plenty of rest before getting behind the wheel. Eat well and also stay fit. Remember, hours of service violations are serious and can threaten your livelihood. They can even threaten your life. You should stay healthy and well rested, or don't drive!

ALWAYS MAINTAIN YOUR VEHICLE
You should inspect your vehicle before each trip and check your brakes regularly. Also, learn how to inspect your brakes, identify safety defects, and get them repaired before risking your life and others on the highway.

BE AWARE OF YOUR "NO-ZONE"
Other drivers often are not aware of the size of your truck's blind spots. You should be vigilant in watching out for vehicles in the No-Zone. The so-called "No-Zone" is the danger areas, or blind spots, around trucks and buses where crashes are more likely to occur. Approximately one-third of all crashes between large trucks and cars take place in the No-Zone.

SLOW DOWN IN WORK ZONES
You should watch out for highway construction, and stay alert. Remember, work zone crashes are more likely to happen during the day. About a third of fatal crashes in work zones involved large trucks. You should take your time going through work zones and give yourself plenty of room. Also, expect the unexpected!

ALWAYS KEEP YOUR DISTANCE
You must always leave enough space between you and the vehicle in front of you. Remember, if you hit someone from behind, you are typically considered "at fault," regardless of the situation. Also, large trucks require more stopping distances than other vehicles. Remember to take advantage of your driving height, and anticipate braking situations.

FASTEN YOUR SEAT BELT
Remember to buckle up for safety and control. If you are in a wreck, a seat belt can save your life and those around you. The seat belt will keep you in your seat and allow you to maintain control of your truck or bus. One major cause of truck and bus driver fatalities involves being ejected from the vehicle. Wearing seat belts is still the single most effective way drivers can save lives and reduce injures on our roadways.

ALWAYS DRIVE DEFENSIVELY
Always avoid aggressive drivers! An estimated two-thirds of all traffic fatalities are caused every year by aggressive driving behaviors. Remember to keep your distance and maintain a safe speed. Speed will do nothing but increase your chance for a crash.

WORK TO HELP YOURSELVES
Always be the professional on the highway and at safety events! Remember to help stranded motorists; notify traffic safety agencies of crashes, unsafe drivers, unsafe roadway conditions, and other situations that can lead to crashes. Consider joining a "Highway Watch" program, if available in your state. A driver's participation in public safety events and performance on the highway can change public perception!

TELL US WHAT IS WRONG
If you know of unsafe situations, please tell us about it. Remember to report unsafe companies, unsafe drivers, unsafe roadways, and unsafe vehicles. The following telephone "hotlines" are maintained for your protection. Please feel free to call us to help make the roads safer and your job easier.

FMCSA Driver Hotline: 1-888-DOT-SAFT (368-7238)
NHTSA Vehicle Hotline: 1-888-327-4236

Logging Truck Collision in Marion County, South Carolina Causes Three Deaths on Memorial Day

Drivers of logging trucks are required to mark logs that hang off the back of their trucks with plainly-visible flags. On Memorial Day afternoon, a Pleasantville, New Jersey, man and two of his children died when their van collided with the back of a logging truck at a dangerous intersection in Marion County, South Carolina. The family had been visiting a relative in the area over the holiday weekend. The wreck happened on Highway 576, which is the main highway out of Myrtle Beach in the area. This is according to press reports from The State Newspaper and WPDE-TV. The only survivor was another of the man's daughters. Some press reports indicated that the surviving daughter was eleven years old, while others said she is thirteen years old.

Fifty-one year old Anthony Bennett died at the scene. His six-year-old son and eleven-year-old (or twelve-year-old, according to some reports) daughter died at the hospital a short time later. The surviving little girl was transported by helicopter to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

The fatal collision snarled traffic for several miles along U.S. Highway 576 and U.S. Highway 501, as emergency personnel rushed to the scene, while thousands of beachgoers traveled through.

The Highway Patrol is still investigating the cause of the accident.

I-85 Tractor Trailer Collision Blocks Traffic in Salisbury, North Carolina

According to the Salisbury (NC) Post, an April 19 collision on Interstate 85 near the Yadkin River bridge involving two tractor-trailers blocked traffic on the interstate for nearly 12 hours.

The 18-wheelers were heading south when one of them hit the other from the rear at about 5 a.m. Both overturned, and hit a guardrail and concrete barrier, but the drivers walked away unhurt. They spilled paint, diesel fuel and motor oil across the interstate. An environmental cleanup crew was called to the scene to handle the spill. The Davidson County Rescue Squad, Emergency Medical Service, Linwood Fire Department, and East Spencer Police Department responded, as did the Department of Transportation crew for repairs to the guardrail and concrete barrier. The semi trucks belong to R&L Transportation and Wiley Sanders Truck Lines.

VIDEO: FedEx Truck Collision

Here is a video of a FedEx tractor trailer slamming into two cars on an icy night last year. The video was shown in news broadcasts all over the country. I have featured this video before, but it bears watching again, because it is the most compelling tractor trailer accident video I've seen. Once you get an idea of what these trucks can do, you will never look at them the same way again. Mishaps involving big trucks must be prevented for the lives and safety of all of those out on the highways. The best way to make sure that happens is to enforce the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.

VIDEO: 18-Wheeler on Fire After Wreck

There is some running commentary in Spanish from whoever took this video, but the commentary is beside the point. Watch this video to get an idea of the kind of mayhem that can result when a big rig wrecks on our highways. It is not uncommon for burn injuries to result from a truck accident. Let's just hope the truck driver got out alive.

VIDEO: Two Tractor Trailers Collide

This video documents a fatal crash involving two tractor trailers and a highway patrol cruiser on Interstate 75 on December 9, 2005. The trooper found a tractor-trailer in the median after it slid off the road. While waiting for a tow truck, a second tractor trailer drives off the road, striking the first truck head-on, killing the driving instantly. Although the trailer of the second truck also struck the patrol car, the highway patrol trooper was not injured.
